This paper reviews the unique implementation of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) techniques by a vertically integrated oilfield equipment supply company (using Dril-Quip as a model) to satisfy API Specification Q1, 9th Edition risk assessment requirements. Highlighted are the Company’s implementation approaches, challenges faced and benefits expected. Through cross-functional team interactions, APQP brings a proactive approach to product quality management starting with product design and continues through verification analysis, validation testing, manufacturing and delivery with the objective of reducing non-conformances. The net results will be improvement in overall product quality, minimizing the need for third party witness, unlocking trapped capacity, increased production volumes, shortened lead times and reduced costs.
