Dril-Quip Presents OTC Paper on Liner Hanger Capacity Ratings
06/10/2016
Liner hangers are a critical part of a drilling system as they provide internal and external pressure resistance and load carrying capability during various drilling/completion operations. Currently there are no industry standards specific to liner hangers that provide guidance for determining accurate liner hanger capacity. The industry has utilized basic engineering equations such as Barlow and Lame and burst equations from various publications such as API 5C3 to describe ratings. Dril-Quip’s extensive investigation using 3-D FEA analysis and validation testing on complex liner hanger geometry has found classic methodology may lead to grossly overstating capacities, and lays the ground work for suggested new standards.
